Free chlorine 01 from chlorine gas

The dosage of liquefied chlorine gas from pressurized containers …

Chlorine gas is widely used in water treatment plants, which have a high consumption of free chlorine. The liquefied and very pure chlorine is cheaply available in the market and comes from suppliers in bottles to the object. These bottles are under pressure. Therefore, the bottles pose a fundamental risk.

The handling of chlorine gas bottles or the chlorine gas drums or the plant for distribution forms the greatest risk source. The modern, low-risk type, to distribute the chlorine gas, consists in the use of a system with negative pressure. From an injector (also known as water jet pump) a negative pressure is generated. Only if this vacuum is present, opens the bottle valve. If the system is leaking, Air is drawn from the environment. If the negative pressure by this leak can not be maintained, locks the bottle valve, the removal of chlorine gas.

This risk is countered with a series of technical measures. When it comes to risks, then the decision is up to the insurance. In Germany, the accident prevention regulation GUV-V D for such plants is considered 5 “Chlorination of water”. Described:

requirements for the room of storage, for example:

  • Entrance,
  • Sprinkler,
  • Warning system,
  • Room equipment,
  • Fixing the tanks to the wall and during transport,

Requirements for the distribution, Measurement- and control system of chlorine gas, for example:

  • Pressurized system,
  • Automatic shutdown devices,
  • Withdrawal quantities.

The requirements of the insurance are set in the checklist together.

At the dosage of chlorine gas in water, hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid is formed. The water will therefore tend to, to turn sour. Countermeasures must be scheduled.

Nevertheless, it may come in the extremely unlikely case to a leakage of chlorine gas. Therefore, the fire department completed special training. Here one Newspaper articles of the Taunus-Zeitung about a training.
